01/12/12 - Eagle Farm, Caulfield and Warwick Farm

Eagle Farm

Race 1 - We open the day with a race for 2 year olds.  As is the case at this time of the year, many of them are untried.  This means we have to be wary about betting.  The interesting runner here is El Tornado (1) who won a trial on the Gold Coast by 9 lengths.  That's very hard to ignore.  However I'm going with Sister Magic (5) who won on debut and for The Silk.  It raced greenly but was still able to win by 1.3 lengths over this trip.  Draws nicely in barrier 2 so should be able to race in a handy position. She gets a 3kg relief for the claim of Matheson which will be beneficial.  Other hopes to El Tornado (1), Londehero (4) and Echo Berry (7).

Race 2 - Poste Restante (3) looks extremely hard to beat here.  Since taking up permanent residency in Brisbane she has raced extremely well.  She's had 3 starts, winning 2 and narrowly going down in the other.  The step up to 2118m won't worry her as she raced in much stronger races around this distance and further during the winter.  She drops 2.5kg on her last start win and will be incredibly hard to hold out.  Other hopes to Trajet (6), Spechenka (1) and Count Encosta (2).

Race 3 - Blow A Kiss, Crazy Mamma and Leica Bita Lippy should ensure a decent speed here.  Endless Shadow (7) races at her best when over middle distances.  This has been well and truly demonstrated at her past 2 starts where she has won nicely over 1660m and 1600m.  Those were in class 3 midweek company but I don't think the step in class will worry her.  She'll be able to charge home off a solid tempo.  Gets the services of senior jock, Michael Cahill.  Other hopes to Blow A Kiss (4), Marculoo (9) and Leica Bita Lippy (10).

Race 4 - Kilwinning Option (2) resumes here and has an outstanding 1st up record.  From 5 resumptions, he's won 4 and ran 2nd in the other.  He loves this distance and has raced well when coming to the city.  He's drawn nicely in barrier 2 and will be given a lovely run by Matheson who claims 3kg off the 58.5kg.  Other hopes to Solebid (7), Go Forest Go (5) and Peace Talks (11).

Race 5 - Speed in this race looks solid with Bound To Blush and Dream'N'Ignite definitely pushing forward from their wide gates. More than likely Funtantes and Jester's Girl will do likewise.  This will allow Risk Aversion (3) to come over the top in the straight.  Risk Aversion loves this track and distance with a record of 3 wins and 2 3rds from 5 races.  She resumes here and has a good fresh record.  Other hopes to Fire Up Fifi (4), Cuddlesome (6) and Bound To Blush (5).

Race 6 - Biggles (2) has lead in his last 2 races and with the lack of pace in this race, I can see him employing the same tactics here to great effect.  Biggles and Jet Style have run 1 and 2 in their past 2 races but with a 2kg turnaround, I can see Biggles getting the better of is rival this time.  This was seen when they raced 2 starts back at equal weights and Biggles won by 1.5 lengths.  Biggles loves this track and will appreciate a firmer surface.  Other hopes to Jet Style (3), Mr Light Blue (5) and Equissential (8).

Race 7 - Big field of 3 year old go around here and the speed looks furious.  Qfighter (5) has looked a nice type in it's 2 starts since resuming.  After walloping the opposition at the Gold Coast, he narrowly went down to General Exhibit who is a good horse.  They beat the rest by nearly 5 lengths.  From the good gate, Colless should be able to position the horse in a nice position.  It will be strong at the finish as shown by it's quick final 600m times.  Other hopes to Discreet (3), Players Choice (4) and Chosen Talent (9).

Race 8 - Last week I thought Seeking More was a good thing at Doomben.  It ran 2nd.  I didn't count on being sat back in my seat by Lucky Sound (13) who beat Seeking More by 3 lengths and made it look like a donkey.  I was greatly impressed by Lucky Sound and I think he can step up to Saturday class and win again.  He has raced well (never worse than 2nd) at this track in his short career.  He has drawn the peg and I can see Larry Cassidy getting the horse into a fantastic position on the speed.  When it's time to go in the straight, the others just won't be able to go with him.  Other hopes to Matabrahma (14), Cyclone Al (8) and Tail And All (15).

***With the scratching of Cyclone Al, I'll promote Gunner Knox (4) to the other hopes***

24/11/12 - Eagle Farm

Eagle Farm

Race 1 - Early 2 year old races are always tough to gauge when the majority of the field are untried.  That's the case here.  However there is 1 that has raced and shown ability.  Craiglea Cruz (1) has had 3 race starts and has looked good in all of them.  This speedy customer won last start on slow going and ran reasonably close to Whiskey Allround in it's 2 starts prior.  He can handle all going which is a bonus with the chance of rain.  He will be able to jump and run from the inside draw.  Other hopes to Still As (11), Valhalla Mist (4) and Maracoola (8).

Race 2 - Double Impact (5) resumes here after a 5 month break.  Last campaign he raced in group and listed races and was competitive.  He has a good record over this distance winning 2 and placing third in 2 others from 5 starts.  He also races well 1st up.  Will appreciate any sting out of the ground and I would gain further confidence if it hosed down.  Other hopes to Jugahlation (4), Theft (2) and Dr Barnard (9).

Race 3 - Heza Jetsetter (1) is looking for 3 straight wins here.  Has to carry 59kg but did carry 58kg when beating Dysfunction 2 starts back who then won on Wednesday.  Last start he narrowly beat General Exhibit which is a horse in form.  He ran on from last in that race so the 1500m and the reasonable speed should suit.  Other hopes to Caballo Rapido (7), Heater (5) and Wonderful Jester (2).

Race 4 - I'm sticking with Dodging Eddie (8) in this 2106m race.  He's had the 1 run over this distance and won it.  As noted last time, he's been racing in good form without winning this campaign and now gets to his pet distance.  He'll race with just 51.5kg after the claim for Matheson.  A number of horses engaged like to race forward so that should really suit his strong finish.  Other hopes to Run Royal Run (3), Excellent Al (9) and Marked (1).

***With the scratching of Run Royal Run, I'll promote Dane Princess (11) to the other hopes***

Race 5 - The White Hope (6) is in all kinds of hot form at the moment.  He's won 3 from 4 and all 3 wins have been demolition jobs.  He has led them a merry dance and I doubt any of these can go with him.  Drops to 54kg after carry 58 and 59kg in his past 2.  My only concern would be if the track got really wet as he failed badly on debut on heavy going.  Other hopes to Sons Of God (5), My Quilter (3) and Arctic (16).

Race 6 - Big field, open race.  I'm going with Soft Angel (16).  This is a lightly raced 4 year old who has been carving Ipswich up.  In it's last 2 starts it has won by 3.3 lengths and 2 lengths while carrying 59 and 58kg.  Yes, those were maiden and class 1 but i think this is a horse with upside.  Something I'm not sure the other have.  This horse will drop to 54kg and has a great record over this trip.  Before breaking it's maiden status it run close to Caellum and Cuddlesome.  From the good gate, Lloyd should be able to position her in a very nice position.  Other hopes to Rocksan (7), Purfectress (2) and Ticket To Dream (8).

Race 7 - A fair clip should be set here with noted front runner Listen Son pushing over from his wide draw to join the likes of Audacious Spirit, Excellantes and Celtic Dancer.  This will help a horse like Carry Me Bluey (5).  This bloke will get back and will be full of beans in the straight.  He resumes here and his 1st up record is excellent with 2 wins and 2 2nds from 5.  He loves this distance and races well at the track.  Trialled nicely this month and looks primed for a 1st up assault.  Other hopes to Excellantes (4), Easy Running (10) and Mystical Grey (6).

Race 8 - Again we have an open race to finish the day.  I've gone with Saluter (9).  This guy raced well as a 2 year old against some nice types such as Sizzling and Hoss Amor.  He resumed earlier this month and ran 2nd by 1 length carrying 59kg.  He was finishing off nicely that day.  He races well at this track and has raced well for D.Browne.  Should be right in this.  Other hopes to Dr Ichi (5), Spot The Rock (1) and Commandere (13).  I would consider horses such as Divine City, Starlin and Mington for the quaddie.

17/11/12 - Eagle Farm, Sandown and Rosehill

I for one am very happy the last few weeks are behind us.  What a ball tearer! Well done if you came out in front.  I'm well and truly licking my wounds.  As is always the case, we get another chance this Saturday.

Eagle Farm

Before we start, a thunder storm is predicted this afternoon in Brisbane so I would tread warily if it takes places during the meeting.  As we know, Eagle Farm becomes a pool with the slightest amount of rain so a severe storm would basically make the track a write off.

***A storm has hit Brisbane before race 1 and the track was downgraded to Slow 7.  I would be very reluctant to get involved now.  I've included some to consider in each race that have wet track form.***

Race 1 - We open with a 2 year old race where only 2 of the 10 have had a race start.  Generally I'd avoid these races.  However there could be a smart type in Sister Magic (7) involved.  This full sister to Miss Imagica has won a trial in Toowoomba and this week put in a great gallop on the sand where she clocked 23.5 for the last 400m.  With the claim for Brooke Richardson, the horse will carry just 51.5kg.  Other hopes to Assertive Love (4), Flying Riddle (1) and Echo Berry (5).

***Wouldn't bother getting involved as none have any wet track exposure***

Race 2 - This is potentially a trap race and I'd be very wary about getting carried away with your betting.  The top 3 horses in the weights are all classy performers but have been quite poor in recent times.  A breakout performance from any of them would hardly shock.  Cuddlesome (4) is a lightly raced 4 year old in great form.  She has won 4 from 8 and has only been out of the placings once in those 8 starts.  The 1000m is short of her pet distance but she's been freshened so I'd imagine she'll be ready to rip here.  Will race with just 52.5kg after the claim for Butler.  I won't be taking ridiculous odds about her especially if we get a wet track. Other hopes to Alltherightmoves (1), Golden Trinkets (8) and Jasminka (3).

***Alltherightmoves (1), Jasminka (2), Karanja (7) and Golden Trinkets (8) get through wet going***

Race 3 - There's a handful of horses that like to take up the running here and with the majority of them drawn out, we should see a solid pace set here.  That should enable Dodging Eddie (6) to work his way into it nicely and come home like a train.  He gets the services of Chris Munce again who knows the horse well.  He has raced well in his 3 runs this campaign and should be cherry ripe for this.  Other hopes to Poste Restante (1), Putyourfaithinme (8) and Santo De Lago (2).

***Santo De Lago (2) has an impressive record on heavy***

Race 4 - I found this to be an open race.  I've gone with Sons Of God (10).  He doesn't win out of turn but is generally not far from the action.  He's had 3 runs this campaign and has finished in the placings all 3 and less than a length from the winner in each.  I think he can get a great run parking just off the leaders from the nice draw.  Other hopes to Jack's Back (4), Marculoo (8) and Crazy Mamma (6).

***With the scratching of Jack's Back, I'll promote Hangover Henry (2) to the other hopes***

Race 5 - Preacher Boy (8) has been in quite good form since resuming 3 starts back. In those runs he's had a win and 2 close 3rds.  He's up in class but drops 4kg on his last start win over 1650m.  Tegan Harrison will be able to position him in the 1st 4 from the good gate.  He's in top shape and will prove strong at the finish.  Other hopes to Biggles (2), Jet Style (7) and Mr Light Blue (3).

Race 6 - This race will take 2 completely different shapes depending on the weather.  I really don't like these 2000m+ races at the best of the times but with question marks over the weather, I'll be sitting out this race.  Horses such as Bid Spotter, Saint Encosta and Marked would be considered on top with a dry track but they can't go a lick in the wet.  If it rains, I'd be looking at Rothera, Buffett, Trajet and Zed Man.

Race 7 - Stone the crows! What a head scratcher we have here.  I'm going with Epic Dragon (4).  He recently joined the Tony Gollan stable and won his 1st start for them over 1200m.  He has a great 2nd up record winning 2 and placing 3rd in 4 2nd up runs.  He has drawn well in barrier 2.  Given his racing in Melbourne was done over much longer distances than the 1300m here, so I would suggest he'll be very strong at the finish.  Other hopes to Rapid Leica Dane (8), Comahni (11) and Requested (9).

Race 8 - If you're alive going into the last leg of the Quaddie, good luck because we've got another tricky race to finish things.  I'm going with Seeking More (7).  He's had 3 starts for 2 wins.  The 2 wins were over 1000m but boy did he look impressive.  Last start he was no match for The White Hope over 1350m.  I have a feeling that was a touch too far for him.  Back to 1200m and a gun run for Chris Munce should see him very hard to beat.  Other hopes to Regular (3), Saluter (1) and Mishani Stealth (6).

10/11/12 - Eagle Farm, Flemington and Warwick Farm

Well it's been a very frustrating Spring Carnival so far. Oaks day really took the cake with five second place finishes.  The only saving grace was jagging the first four in race 1 which made handsomely for a smallish field.  Maybe I'm a sucker for punishment but I'll go around again Saturday. What else is there to do on a Saturday right?

Eagle Farm

Race 1 - It's been raining Friday afternoon and into the evening so it will be important to see how the track is graded in the morning.  We open with the 2 year old colts and geldings.  I'm going with the horse with race experience here in the top weight Craiglea Cruz (1).  This horse has had 2 starts and has raced well behind Whiskey Allround.  In it's most recent start in ran a close 2nd after racing on the speed.  He has shown quite a bit of speed and will be able to boot forward from the nice gate.  Other hopes to More Than Noble (5), Our Zidane (7) and Shantung Boxer (8).

**With the scratching of More Than Noble, I'll promote Danehill Music (3) to the other hopes**

Race 2 - Adebisi (1) resumes here and should make short work of the opposition.  This guy flies fresh as shown by his record of 3 wins from 6 starts when resuming.   Last time 1st up he defeated Spirit of Boom.  He should jump and run from the 2 gate and prove very hard to run down.  Other hopes to Seek And Find (2), Gundy Son (3) and Rocket To Glory (4).  It would appear the handicapper has it right!

Race 3 - Easy Running (3) competed in Group races during the winter and resumes here.  Last campaign he arrived late to win 1st up over 1000m in Listed company.  He has trialled twice leading into this so he should be right to fire.  Will be able to sit just behind the leaders and pounce in the straight.  Other hopes to Jugahlation (5) and Havatryst (2).

***Keep an eye on the track condition as if it gets in the slow/heavy range, Jugahlation has to really come into consideration***

Race 4 - Wonderful Jester (7) has put together 2 wins on the trot and may have finally worked out what it's all about.  Those wins have both been over this distance.  Will carry 54kg which is quite a drop on what he has been used to.   Michael Cahill should be able to give the horse a terrific run from the inside draw.  Other hopes to Binalong Road (5), Jack's Back (1) and Griffith Lad (2).

***With the scratching of Griffith Lad, I'll promote Side To Side (4) to the other hopes***

Race 5 - This looks a tricky race to kick off the quadrella.  I'm putting Lightfeet Lady (3) on top.  She has done most of her racing in Rockhampton but has joined the Steele Ryan stable in Brisbane.  Gets the services of Jimmy Byrne which will help to overcome the awkward barrier.  This mare loves the distance winning 4 from 8.  Has won 1st up previously.  Ran 2nd in the Newmarket last campaign so should be strong over this shorter trip.  Other hopes to Zarmarski (6), Royal Shout (8) and Dr Barnard (1).

Race 6 - Not a race I'm keen to get involved in.  Funny that, given it's a 2200m race in Brisbane!  Run Royal Run will start a deserving short priced favourite.  However I think Buffett (4) might be able to get a cheap lead and be very hard to run down. He's been around the mark in these races recently and last start only just went down to RRR.  Gets a 4kg  weight advantage on that run and that could prove telling.  Other hopes to Run Royal Run (3), Attica (1) and Break The Ice (7).

Race 7 - General Exhibit may well blow these away as it's been impressive in it's brief career.  However I'm not sure he'll get things his own way from the outside gate.  I can see Lady Colours, Joint Iniative and possibly Gwennie, Sigmund and Platinum all trying to push up early on it's inside.  If that happens it could set it up for the unlucky Caballo Rapido (5).  I think he offers much better value.  If the speed is on, he'll be running on.  Last time he ran 2nd to Reflectance over 1500m in a race suited to leaders.  The horse has a good record at the track and will race with 54kg after the claim for Myers.  Other hopes to General Exhibit (1), Heza Jetsetter (6) and Joint Iniative (3).

Race 8 - Boys On Tour (4) looks well placed to win the last.  This guy is a noted wet tracker but his form on good going isn't poor.  Last campaign he ran 3rd in a Group 3 to Mental.  I'm not sure many of these could do the same.  His 1st up run a few weeks ago highlighted that the 1400m here will be right up his alley.  I think class will prevail.  Other hopes to Flying Jet (13), Cyclone Al (1) and Straight (11).

***With the scratchings of Cyclone Al and Straight, I'll promote Chief Bright Star (8) and Tunahog (12)***

03/11/12 - Eagle Farm, Flemington and Rosehill

Eagle Farm

Race 1 - I'm not interested in getting involved in this race for 2 year old fillies.

Race 2 - Not a race I'm particularly excited about getting involved in.  Only 6 horses are engaged over 2200m.  I'm putting Topping (3) on top.  He will be a lot fitter after having his 1st run for a month last start where he finished a few lengths off Grey Assignment.  He should be able to control the race from in front.

Race 3 - Billy Aucash (5) was found out last start over an unsuitably longer distance.  He drops back to his pet distance range.  He won his only start over 1600m and has a win and a 3rd from 3 starts at this track.  Jockey Ryan Wiggins has ridden the horse 5 times for 3 wins and 3rd.  He will be able to get into a good position from the inside draw just behind a couple that will come across from the outside.  Other hopes to Dienekes (1), On Face Value (2) and Cyclone Al (3).

Race 4 - Morning Captain (3) won well start and steps up to a more favourable distance.  That makes him incredibly tough to beat.  He has won 3 times from 5 starts over this distance and goes particularly well at this track.  There doesn't seem to be many horses here that will challenge him for the lead and I can see him just dictating terms and proving very hard to run down.  Other hopes to Fillydelphia (1), Jet Style (10) and St Germaine (5).

Race 5 - Ticket To Dream (5) looks ready to show her best here 3rd up.  She won 3rd up last campaign and put in an encouraging performance last time out.  She narrowly lost that race but it showed that she was looking for the extra trip here.  She's undefeated in 2 starts over this distance.  Ryan Wiggins has ridden the horse in all her wins.  A solid tempo should allow her to really charge home.  Other hopes to Gunner Knox (2), Cracco (6) and Golden Cash (3).

Race 6 - Our Hussey (3) has been racing consistently throughout this campaign.  Last time out she drew a wide gate and showed tremendous fight to narrowly go down after racing 3 wide.  She draws ideally here and will be able to lob right behind the leaders.  Her record at the track and distance is a good one.  She looks well weighted after the claim.  Other hopes to Dream'N'Ignite (10), Empress Me (11) and Raise Up (4).

Race 7 - Audacious Spirit (10) looks to have been placed really well 1st up to win.  This horse always races well fresh and put in a bottler of a trial leading into this.  His record over this distance is excellent.  Jeff Lloyd is the ideal jockey to get him across to the front from the tricky gate.  From there, I think he can dictate the race.  He has a touch of quality compared to the others.  Other hopes to Balkuin (3), Purettan (6) and Bribie (4).

Race 8 - Looks like a tricky 1000m scamper to finish the card.  There's a lot of horses engaged that have shown a liking for leading.  That should create a fair speed up front.  For that reason, I'm going with a horse that has shown an ability to run on.  Regular (3) looked a nice type of horse in it's initial campaign.  It raced competitively against the likes of Sizzling and Discreet.  It's draw awkwardly but with so many going forward, I think he can get himself into a reasonable position.  Veteran jockey Jim Byrne will help that.  Other hopes to Sunset Affair (9), Rocky King (2) and Harlequin's Gold (4).
