06/04/13 - Golden Slipper Day

Rosehill Gardens

Race 1 - Golden Slipper day sees 9 Group races on the card.  Unfortunately we'll be racing on a heavy track.  With the rail out 4m, those horses that race on the speed should be suited.  In the opening race over 2000m I'm going with Lights Of Heaven (1).  This mare has the ability to race forward or back but with the lack of speed in this race I can see jockey Luke Nolen pushing her forward and being awfully hard to catch.  She has a good record over this distance, only being out of the placings once in 5 starts.  Her heavy track record reads 1 win and a second from 2 tries in the wet.  Should be primed for this after a 2nd in Group 2 company over 1600m.  Other hopes to Hoylonny (7), Lunayir (5) and Hula Lua (9).

Race 2 - A big field of 15 two year olds go around here where only 4 of them have managed to win a race.  Add to that the fact that very few have encountered any kind of moisture in the track and things get very interesting!  Given the unknowns, I simply can't get involved in this race.  If I succumb then I'll probably just have a few dollars on Peter Robl's mount Diva Dee for interest.  

Race 3 - Hippopus (8) looks a tough, young stayer in the making.  He has shown an ability to lead or be very handy and kick on in his past 3 starts.  From the good barrier, Nash For Cash Rawiller will be able to position him either in the lead or in the leading few with relative ease.  Being a High Chaparral, he can handle the wet as shown by his win and a 2nd from 2 goes on slow going.  Unlike a lot of his rivals, he can run the distance out strongly.  Other hopes to Proverb (2), Indianapolis (11) and Twisted Emotions (9).

Race 4 - I'm going with the kiwi filly Habibi (4) in the Vinery.  This filly has put together an impressive record in NZ, winning 6 of 7 starts.  3 of these wins were at Group 2 and Group 1 level.  She has won up to 2400m so getting the distance will not be a concern.  She handled a slow track when winning the Group 2 Northern Guineas over 1600m by 3.3 lengths.  She draws nicely and will get a great spot better than midfield I would suspect.  Other hopes to Norzita (3), Dear Demi (2) and Alzora (6).

Race 5 - Fiveandhalfstar has been costly of late for me and with the heavy track, I simply can't have it.  Because I'm off, that probably ensures he wins!  I'll be on Le Roi (9) at nice each way odds.  This horse rises in class here but has won 5 of 8 starts.  Two starts back it won the Summer Cup over 2400m so it will get the distance.  It is also undefeated in 2 starts on slow going.  Glyn Schofield should be able to get the horse into an excellent position from the nice draw.  Other hopes to Foreteller (1), Fiveandhalfstar (12) and Maluckyday (5).

Race 6 - With the heavy track in play, I'll be taking More Joyous on at the odds on offer.  Red Tracer (4) is an absolute swimmer winning all 5 starts on heavy going.  I can see her getting across to 1 out 1 back from the draw.  Her record isn't overly flash over this distance but I think the wet track really brings her into this.  Record at the track is a good one.  Other hopes to More Joyous (1), Appearance (3) and Mid Summer Music (6).   

Race 7 - The Golden Slipper.  I'm going with the kiwi Ruud Awakening (12).  This filly has been racing really well back home, winning 5 of 6.  She is 3 from 3 over this distance and has run quick sectionals.  The wet track casts a bit of mystery over this race.  I believe Ruud Awakening will handle the track.  Firstly it's 2 from 2 on dead going and won a trial on slow.  However looking at a videos of it's sire Bernardini racing showed that it won the 2006 Group 2 Jim Dandy by 9 lengths on a sloppy mess dirt track.  If it has inherited that sort of effortless ability in the wet then I'm quite happy to get on board.  It's drawn the outside gate which is a concern but she has the services of champion jockey Craig Williams to negate that.  I just think it's tremendous value.  Other hopes to Sweet Idea (13), Overreach (11) and Whittington (6).

Race 8 - I can't go past Pierro (11) but I won't be backing it at the odds on offer.  This is a serious racehorse and I don't think I have to go into the reasons why I think he'll win.  If I get involved I'll play the exotics with Rebel Dane (12) and Shoot Out (1).  

Race 9 - Going with Skytrain (4) in the last.  This horse loves a heavy track as shown by it's record of 5 wins and 2 2nds from 10 goes on a heavy surface.  It has a great record over this distance at this track.  It's racing in good form and enters this on the back of a heavy track win by 1.8 lengths over Streama.  Other hopes to Tiger Tees (5), Ladys Angel (13) and Rarefied (7).
