20/10/12 - Caulfield Cup Day

Last week saw a return to form of sorts for The Silk with 8 winners found.  These being Snitzerland $2.00, Buffering $2.40, Ocean Park $1.50 and Solzhenitsyn $4.90 at Caulfield; Rebel Dane $5.60, Malavio $2.00 and Agueda $3.80 at Rosehill and just the sole winner but it was a beauty at Doomben in Beseech which paid $9.

This week I'll be covering Eagle Farm, Caulfield and Randwick.  Best of luck!

Eagle Farm

Race 1 - The opening race for 2 year olds sees many unraced youngsters going around.  The top weight Whiskey Allround  (1) has had 2 starts for 2 wins and has looked impressive in both.  It's hard to look past him.  We'll be asked to take a very short price so betting on him may not be an option particularly when he has to carry 59.5kg.  I feel that there's more value in backing the 1st starter Alondra (7).  This filly comes from the astute Schweida stable and will race with just 51kg after the claim for Matheson.  That's a massive advantage getting 8.5kgs on Whiskey Allround. Alondra won a jumpout with ease leading into this.  She has drawn a nice barrier so will be given every possible chance.  Other hopes to Whiskey Allround (1), Jitterbug (8) and Craiglea Cruz (2).

Race 2 - Another uninspiring 2000m+ race in Brisbane.  Today we see 8 runners going around.  Spoiler Alert: I don't think Glencadam Gold can win the Caulfield Cup.  It's obviously a very good and in form horse so finishing 2 lengths from it in the Newcastle Cup should hold Saint Encosta (2) in good stead.  His record is a win and a 2nd from 3 starts over this distance.  Other hopes to Attica (3), They Won't Last (4) and Rothera (1).

Race 3 - It would not surprise me if Reflectance comes out and blows these away.  However I'm not prepared to take less than $2 on a young horse who has to carry 59kg and missed the start last time.  Huxtable (3) comes off a last start maiden win at Doomben over 1350m where he sat on the speed.  With weight relief on his rivals and a nice gate, I can see him taking advantage of that and putting the pressure on.  He worked well during the week.  Other hopes to Reflectance (1), Niello's Gift (7) and Antarctic Dream (2).

***With the scratching of Huxtable, I'll promote Reflectance (1) to top pick and promote Joint Initiative (4) to the other hopes***

Race 4 - Koranovsky (7) is racing in a rich vein of form at the moment.  2 starts back she was run down late by Whateverwhenever who has since run well in Melbourne.  Last start she fought hard to beat Cuddlesome over 1500m.  Gets the services of Chris Munce who will be able to place the horse in an excellent position from the good gate.  She has a very good record at this track.  Other hopes to Fillydelphia (2), Bold Glance (1) and Joint Chiefs (4).

Race 5 - Well I've been saying for some time that I won't be backing The Reveller again.  Each time, I give him another chance.  Well not today.  That means he'll probably come out and win!  I'm throwing my support behind Welcome Parade (7).  This horse goes well over this distance and has a good 1st up record. 1st up last time in, she ran 2nd by 1.3 lengths to Pear Tart who has proven to be a good horse.  Rosie Myer takes the ride and has won both times she's ridden the horse.  Welcome Parade will carry just 52kg after the claim.  From all reports, she worked impressively during the week.  Other hopes to The Reveller (4), Dr Barnard (3) and High On Octane (11).

Race 6 - Arado (3) enters this race in good form.  His last 2 starts have been over 1350m and he's run close up to Solebid and Beseech.  Both horses have been racing very well lately so that has to be good form for this race.  The 1500m shouldn't pose any problems as he's been running on.  Has the added bonus of Chris Munce directing.  Work during the week was good.  Other hopes to Gunner Knox (2), Defenceman (5) and Confident (8).

Race 7 - Transporter (6) has been a nice earner for The Silk and I think he can continue doing so here.  The horse has now won 6 from 14.  He loves this distance winning 3 from 3 (his last 3 starts).  His record at the track is also tops.  While I'm running off stats, Michael Cahill has ridden the horse 4 times for 4 wins.  I think he can get the horse travelling in a very nice spot from the inside gate and prove hard to run down.  Other hopes to Grey Assignment (2), Marked (9) and Playaction (7).

Race 8 - Should be plenty of value floating around in the get out.  It looks to be an open affair.  I'm going with the Tony Gollan trained Rodrigeuz (14).  This guy won 1st up and has since trained on.  He has a solid record over this distance and has won previously 2nd up.  Gets in with 52kg after the claim for Matheson.  I expect a solid speed to be set which will help him get home strongly.  Other hopes to Jabiru Dreaming (1), Tunahog (12) and Jugahlation (3).
