12/05/12 - Caulfield, Rosehill and Doomben

The Silk has been in reasonable form the past month with a winning strike rate of 31% and 29% profit on turnover.  We look to carry that good form into the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Caulfield

Racd 1 - Champagne Ruby should get things off to a winning start.  Will race as favourite but should be winning after 2 impressive wins.  These wins have been by 4 and 5 lengths at Cranbourne on dry and wet tracks.  Will be able to dictate things in front.  Other hopes to Ominous Quality, City Of Song and Lakers Bay.

Race 2 - This is a competitive race for 2 year olds.  I'm going to have a small wager on Ride A Rock Horse.  Won well on debut on a dead track at Seymour.  Gets an inside gate here and should be able to push up into a handy position.  3kg off for Duffy.  Other hopes to Anniversary Belle, Affable and Big Chill.

Race 3 - I'm not particularly keen to get involved here.  Having said that I could be persuaded to have a small bet on The Night's Hot.  Won well at this track and over this distance last start where she beat Manila Jewel.  Meets Manila Jewel worse at the weights but the win over that horse suggests that may not be a factor.  Goes well on a dead track.  Other hopes to Manila Jewel, Shezaten and Blue Nile.

Race 4 - Magnifique Soleil. has a tremendous strike rate, winning 7 from 15 and placing in 4 others.  Won comprehensively over 1700m last start so the step up to 1800m should not be of any concern.  Will get a great run and has the in form Nick Hall on board.  Other hopes to Turnitup, Larry's Never Late and The Wingman.

Race 5 - Platelet will be tough to hold out here 2nd up.  Didn't have much luck when resuming behind Tres Vite but still came within a few lengths of winning.  Has a perfect record over this trip at this track.  Other hopes to Classy Chloe, Stratigraphy and You Tell Me.

Race 6 - I'm going with Stratcombe here.  This guy has put together a good record in his short career, winning 5 from 10 starts with 4 minors.  He goes particularly well at this track.  Dead track is ideal.  Will be given a great run by Froggy Newitt.  Other hopes to Le Remas, Forty Two Below and It's Crunch Time.

Race 7 - There's Only One will be particularly hard to beat here with no weight.  Goes around with just 52.5kg after the claim for Duffy.  Has a great overall record, winning 6 from 14.  It resumes here and it's 1st up record is a good one, never being out of the placings.  Likes this track and distance.  Other hopes to Tariana, Silkstone Special and Rue Maple.

Race 8 - The Silk's on the board of the Pago Rock fan club.  This horse has provided several wins for us and I think he'll be returning to the winner's stall today.  He was desperately unlucky last start when he was held up for a run when cantering behind the leaders.  Has a great record on a dead track and over this distance.  Other hopes to Utah Saints, Eclair Surprise and Gold Sand.

Rosehill

Race 1 - Not keen to get involved here.

Race 2 - I'll have a small bet on Tribal Rock.  Has put together a good record in it's short career, winning 3 from 4.  It has won it's last 2 starts over 1600m so the extra 200m here won't hurt.  Other hopes to Lucripetous, Galator and Gnarly.

Race 3 - Didntcostalot has been racing competitively in better quality races than this and should be too strong here.  Should be able to lead or sit on the back of Skip Town and then bolt away.  Other hopes to King's Dominion, Skip Town and Whitlam.

***With the scratching of Whitlam, I'll add Startreusse to the other hopes***

Race 4 - I was initially concerned about the weight Delabombell has to carry here. However she has won with this weight in the past.  This horse has been racing really well in Melbourne previous to this against horses such as Miss Octopussy and Rue Maple.  I'd suggest that sort of form would be too much for these to handle.  Stead has ridden the horse to 3 wins from 4 starts.  Goes tremendously well on good to dead tracks.  Other hopes to Shelters, Titbit and Gai's Choice.

Race 5 - I was on Moriarty last start and I don't see a reason to get off here.  This horse has had 2 runs in Australia and they've both been full of merit.  It has been running on over 1800m and it looks primed for a win 3rd up here.  Has been placed in a Group 3 internationally.  Other hopes to Song Shan, Polar Circle and Kwilas Law.

Race 6 - Wazn has a fantastic record at this track winning 3 from 5.  Is also undefeated in it's 2 races here over this distance.  It's 1st up run was good but I suspect it will be even better 2nd up.  Other hopes to Herculian Prince, Skyerush and Crafty Irna.

Race 7 - I'm going with Falzzon in this.  Not overly keen on the race but I think this guy might be able to get up here.  Will get a lovely run from the 3 gate.  It's last 2 starts it's been a bit out of it's league but ran fairly well.  This isn't as hard as those races.  It's too open a race for my liking to be naming other hopes.  A horse of interest will be Oh Oklahoma who is resuming after 5 and half years off the scene.

Race 8 - Under The Sun is a horse on the up.  Has won 3 from 5 starts.  It's also won both it's starts this campaign.  It should be able to get to the front with relative ease here and dictate terms.  Drops 3kg on past starts.  Other hopes to Thumbtacks, Cosmonaut and Zedlion.

Doomben

Race 1 - Angel Of Mercy should have way too much class for these.  Won the listed James Carr last start over 1400m and has form around Shopaholic.  I'll be watching with interest to see how Mourasana goes for longer trips later on.

Race 2 - Excellantes has to carry 60kg here but against this field has earned it.  Looking back it has carried big weights like this before and run well.  Frankly he's a better quality horse than these.  Has a great 2nd up record and loves this distance.  Browne will be able to give him a great run.  Other hopes to Altai Warrior, Vintage Moss and Demanding Miss.

Race 3 - I'm going with Hoss Amor here.  This filly won on debut before running ok in the Gold Coast magic millions.  Will get a great run from the peg with the in form McDonald in the saddle.  I don't think she's here for a hair cut.  Other hopes to Choice Bro, Better Than Ready and Dansal.

Race 4 - I've gone with Nuptse here after much deliberation.  I wouldn't be surprised if Seek And Find wins but I just felt Nuptse had a weight advantage here and Seek And Find's 1st up record isn't overly flash.  Nuptse loves this distance winning 3 from 5.  Has won both it's starts over this distance at this track.  Other hopes to Seek And Find, Rescue Mission and Miss Barwang.

Race 5 - Geez this is an ordinary race.  So many horses out of form.  I'm have a small interest bet on Streets Away.  Ran reasonably well last start for 3rd on the heavy going over 2200m. Down in the weights and will appreciate a dry track.  Other hopes to the field.

Race 6 - The kiwi horses should play a big hand in this race.  I'm going with one of them in Poste Restante.  Almost by default as I was keen on Malandrino.  Poste Restante ran 2nd to it in a Group 3 before coming across to Australia.  I'm a little concerned about some of these getting 2000m.  That's not the case with this filly.  She has raced this distance or further in her last 3 starts and has been competitive in each.  Gets a great alley and local jockey Munce on board.  Other hopes to Trump, Isopach and Nashville.

Race 7 - Who isn't a Buff fan?  I'm a little concerned that Buffering is rated a 50/50 chance to run here after copping a hoof injury.  However he's the best horse in the race so he has to go on top.  He has competed with Black Caviar and Hay List.  The barrier won't be as much of a problem as many people are saying as he has the best front running jockey in Australia on board in Nash Rawiller.  He's in excellent form and deserves this.  Other hopes to Sea Siren, Facile Tigre and Beaded.

***With the scratching of Buffering, I'll make Sea Siren my top pick and add Varenna Miss to the other hopes***

Race 8 - Solzhenitsyn said back me next start when he was bitterly unlucky not to win last time.  He has been absolutely flying since coming back from a spell and I reckon he's cherry ripe to take this out.  Just loves this track and distance.  Other hopes to Oak Street, Mossriver and Viva Las.
