12/01/13 - Magic Millions Day

Glitz and glamour hits the Gold Coast for the annual Magic Millions raceday.  As is the norm this time of year, the day will be hot and racing will be on a good track.

Race 1 - We kick things off with a big field of maidens.  I'm going with the Rob Heathcote trained Tiger Jet (7).  This guy has had 2 starts for a 2nd and a 3rd.  He hasn't been far off in each of these and was running on in each.  He'll appreciate being back on top of the ground here after racing on a slow track last time.  He's drawn well and Wiggins should be able to place him nicely.  Other hopes to Royal Jester (5), Gallinari (15) and Danrho (2).

Race 2 - Kinnersley (1) has to lug 59kg but it is clearly the best credentialed horse in the race and deserves it.  2 starts back he carried the same weight to win the Goulburn Cup over 1600m.  In that race he nosed out Scream Machine who is racing in good form.  Last start he competed in the Villiers and ran 10th but was only a couple of lengths off the winner.  He drew poorly that day and raced wide so the run wasn't that bad.  He draws well today and Tommy Berry will be able to make the most of it and take up a prominent position, possibly lead.  Given the right ride, he'll be tough to pass in the straight.  Other hopes to Noisy Ocean (9), Master Avatar (13) and Tai Tai Tess (5).

Race 3 - I've struggled to work out how these horses will settle after the gates open.  I feel with so many horses that like to lead or race handy that the speed will be solid.  My concern is that they're going to cut at each other for the lead which will set it up for those running on.   I'm putting Mosse Diva (7) on top with no great deal of confidence.  This is an open race but she's been racing with a great deal of consistency.  She hasn't been out of the placings in her last 5 starts, 3 of those being wins.  All 4 of her wins have been over 1400m so the 1300m here should be to her liking.  Generally she likes to lead but last start she jumped awkwardly and had to race from the back and 3 wide.  She ran 3rd but wasn't too far off the winner.  She gets the services of Hugh Bowman here which is a plus.  Other hopes to Capital Commander (1), Bennetta (14) and Playtime (5).

Race 4 - Leealan (6) is a locally trained horse at the Gold Coast and has a great record on his home circuit.  He's won 4 from 7 here and also has won or placed in 10 of 14 career starts.  He'll jump and run and hopefully have enough in the tank to hold on.  Last start he finished 4th in listed company to Easy Running.  He's 1st up here and has never been out of the placings in 3 1st up runs.  Other hopes to Eagle Falls (1), Doubtful Jack (2) and Rocket To Glory (7).

Race 5 - Sizzling (1) has drawn the carpark in barrier 20.  Initially I thought he can't win from there.  However after looking closer I think he's good enough to overcome the poor draw.  Firstly he has the master jockey Craig Williams riding. Williams will give him every possible chance.  A number of horses that have drawn to the inside such as the Waterhouse pair are untried at this trip and I have strong doubts over their ability to run the 1400m out.  They will however set a nice pace in front and that will assist Sizzling who has an almighty finish.  He has won over 1400m and 1600m so you know he'll run this out strongly.  Other hopes to Lucky Hussler (2), Platinum State (5) and No Looking Back (10).

Race 6 - Missy Longstocking (7) is unbeaten in her 4 starts.  She enters this coming off a strong win in the Group 3 McLachlin.  After jumping awkwardly, she settled midfield before racing away 200m out.  She would have derived great benefit from that run and will be cherry ripe for this.  She draws beautifully here in barrier 5 which will give Browne the chance to position her just behind the leaders.  Other hopes to Sweet Idea (10), Assail (8) and Clevadude (3).

****As I've been writing this, Racing Queensland have issued a press release in relation to Missy Longstocking undergoing a vet examination after she was found to be striding slightly short in front.  This doesn't fill me with confidence.  It was a toss up between Sweet Idea (10) and Missy so Sweet Idea now goes on top.  She's 2nd up here and will be all the fitter for her 1.3 length 2nd to Missy Longstocking last start.****

***With the scratching of Assail (8), I'll promote Architect (17) to the other hopes***

Race 7 - Steel Zip (5) has had 2 starts since a spell and looks ready to win this.  He won well 1st up beating Phelan Ready.  He then had a short freshen up and looked to be winning again until his condition gave out and he ran 2nd to Biggles here over 1300m.  He'll be better for that run and will be hard to hold out.  Other hopes to Phelan Ready (2), Biggles (6) and Startsmeup (3).

Race 8 - I'm Cool (6) looks to get all the favours in the final race on the card.  He has great overall record, winning 4 of 5. His only loss was a narrow one to Someday who is no slouch.  He resumed 3 weeks ago and defeated Longshoreman over this distance.  I can see him just pinging the gate and taking up an easy lead in front and then bolting away in the straight.  Other hopes to Double Impact (4), Carmine King (3) and Whisperossa (8).
