27/10/12 - Doomben, Moonee Valley and Rosehill

Doomben

Race 1 - We open with a 2 year old race over 1110m with very little to go on.  I'm going with Octane Flyer (1) who won well on debut.  He hadn't trialled before that run so with natural improvement, he should be tough to toss.  With the rail out 8m, he will be able to take advantage of the nice draw and run on the speed.  Hardest to beat Greytfilly (11) and Midway (8).

Race 2 - Spot The Rock (5) won his 1st start for the Gollan stable and can back it up here.  That race was at this track and he did it with relative ease.  His Sydney form stacks up well for a race like this and he reportedly put in some nice work this week.  With speed on his outside, I can see him being able to track them across and take up a position in the first 4.  Will race with 55kg after the claim for Rosie Myer.  Other hopes to Tahitian Black (7), Rocket To Glory (4) and Jugahlation (2).

***With the scratching of Jugahlation, I'll promote Dee Bee Nine (3) to the other hopes***

Race 3 - Run Royal Run (5) has built a very nice record.  He's won 4 out of 9 races and all those wins have been at this track.  He won over 2000m here last start and can win again.  Quite a few of the beaten brigade back up again in this race.  He looks like he has more upside than his rivals.  Other hopes to Eureka Jack (4), They Won't Last (6) and Buffett (2).

Race 4 - Over half the small field come out of the race that Funtantes won 2 weeks ago.  On that day, Funtantes got away with murder in front and proved too hard to catch.  I can't see that happening again.  Theft (4) ran 3rd in that race but gets in here with just 52.5kg after the claim of Myer.  From gate 3, I think she can push Theft forward to either lead or very close to it.  This horse loves the track and distance and trained nicely this week.  Other hopes to Morning Captain (3), Funtantes (2) and Celtic Dancer (1).

Race 5 - Gibberer (3) has drawn poorly but has been racing in great form.  I can see a solid speed being set with quite a few on the inside going forward, so the barrier may not be as bad as it looks.  Last start he steamed home to win and I can see that happening again.  Perfect winning record at this track and distance.  Other hopes to Lady Colours (1), The Storeman (4) and Substation (7).

Race 6 - Bang On (8) has raced well this campaign where she has won 2 from 3.  Last start she ran 5th but there were a few reasonable types in that and I couldn't see too many of these being competitive in that race.  The horse particularly enjoys this track winning 2 and placing in 2 others from 5 starts here.  With Rockdale rolling on up front, it should enable Bang On to come home in a flurry.  Other hopes to Preacher Boy (7), Sea Marvista (11) and Jack's Back (6).

Race 7 - I'm going to stick with Beseech (2) who won the cash last time out for The Silk paying around $9.  I see little between it and Flying Jet but I have been swayed by the way each races and the fact the rail is out 8 metres.  Beseech is racing in great fashion, winning it's last 2.  He'll be able to go forward and take up a position in the 1st 4 with little effort.  He has a great record over this distance and won his only start over this trip at the track.  Gets in relatively well at the weights after the claim for Vance.  Other hopes to Flying Jet (9), Poste Restante (11) and Endless Shadow (10).

Race 8 - Requested (6) has drawn the peg here and will look to make the most of it.  He races 2nd up here and that would appear to be when he does his best work.  His record 2nd up is 2 wins and a 3rd from 5 starts.  He worked really well this week and looks primed.  In an open race, I think he offers tremendous value.  Other hopes to Catch The Light (3), Dr Barnard (2) and Comahni (7).

26/10/12 - Manikato Stakes

Race 1 - Crafty Cruiser (4) hasn't won too many races in his 42 starts but he has been a model of consistency over this distance range.  Over the 3000m he has 2 wins and 3 2nds from 6 starts.  At the track and distance he has 3 2nds from 4 starts. He comes into this race off a win at Mornington where he ran on from last.  Verdant ran 2nd in that race.  Drops 4kgs from that run.  I think he can position up nicely in the 1st 4 or 5 from the good gate.  Other hopes to Buxted (1), Verdant (5) and Single Minded (2).

Race 2 - Manila Jewel (1) will take full advantage of the inside draw here and take up a prominent position.  She has a great record at this track and distance and will appreciate firmer footing than that she faced last start Cranbourne.  Two starts back she ran a close 2nd to Chateau Margeaux who raced well in the Geelong Cup on Wednesday.  Other hopes to Silent Attitude (4), Innocent Lady (2) and Rock Hit (8).

Race 3 - Sir Fernando (5) is 3rd up here and looks well placed.  Last campaign following 2 solid runs he won 3rd up at this track and venue.  Craig Newitt was the jockey on that occasion and has a tremendous record on the horse, winning 3 from 4.  The horse loves this track and distance as shown by his undefeated record.  Should be able to get a great run from barrier 4.  Other hopes to Sea Lord (3), Excellantes (1) and General Truce (2).

Race 4 - Saturn Rock (5) has only won 1 from 9 but has been in the placings 8 times.  She looks ready to win after a series of 3rds to some nice types.  I'm thinking that they could move along fairly quickly here which will allow this filly to come over the top.  Other hopes to Purple Storm (6), Agueda (4) and Angelic Light (9).

Race 5 - It's Crunch Time (2) has built an impressive record winning 4 and placing 2nd in 4 others from 9 starts.  He resumes here and races particularly well fresh.  He has a fondness at this track where he's recorded 2 wins from 3 starts.  Last prep he had form around Freereturn and Stratcombe.  Jockey Michael Rodd should be able to cross early and take up a forward position.  Other hopes to Umgeton (4), Vatican (6) and Tykook (7).

Race 6 - The Manikato Stakes sees a crack field of sprinters going around.  I simply can't go past the Bulldog, Buffering (1).  I just love this bloke and it would feel wrong backing against him.  Having said that, he is racing in terrific form.  Trainer Rob Heathcote has said that he couldn't have the horse in better condition for the race.  His record at the track is a good one and Bowman will make full use of the peg.  Other hopes to Ready To Rip (4), Sea Siren (7) and Hallowell Belle (3).

Race 7 - Stella Lante (4) ran well for 5th in the 1000 Guineas when not getting a lot of room.  When clear she did finish off well.  Given that, I think she'll be a lot stronger than these at the business end of the 1600m.  Only start at the track she came 2nd to Love For Ransom.  Other hopes to Love For Ransom (2), Balaclava Lady (6) and Volume One (12).

Race 8 - Oregon Spirit (6) is the 1 for me in the last.  This guy has been racing well and has his hoof on the till.  He has a good record at this track and distance.  Last start he drew wide and raced the same way yet still only went down by just under a length.  With an ounce of luck, he'll be hard to hold out.  Other hopes to The Wingman (3), Lord Wimble (5) and Canonized (8).

Best Bets

20/10/12 - Caulfield Cup Day

Last week saw a return to form of sorts for The Silk with 8 winners found.  These being Snitzerland $2.00, Buffering $2.40, Ocean Park $1.50 and Solzhenitsyn $4.90 at Caulfield; Rebel Dane $5.60, Malavio $2.00 and Agueda $3.80 at Rosehill and just the sole winner but it was a beauty at Doomben in Beseech which paid $9.

This week I'll be covering Eagle Farm, Caulfield and Randwick.  Best of luck!

Eagle Farm

Race 1 - The opening race for 2 year olds sees many unraced youngsters going around.  The top weight Whiskey Allround  (1) has had 2 starts for 2 wins and has looked impressive in both.  It's hard to look past him.  We'll be asked to take a very short price so betting on him may not be an option particularly when he has to carry 59.5kg.  I feel that there's more value in backing the 1st starter Alondra (7).  This filly comes from the astute Schweida stable and will race with just 51kg after the claim for Matheson.  That's a massive advantage getting 8.5kgs on Whiskey Allround. Alondra won a jumpout with ease leading into this.  She has drawn a nice barrier so will be given every possible chance.  Other hopes to Whiskey Allround (1), Jitterbug (8) and Craiglea Cruz (2).

Race 2 - Another uninspiring 2000m+ race in Brisbane.  Today we see 8 runners going around.  Spoiler Alert: I don't think Glencadam Gold can win the Caulfield Cup.  It's obviously a very good and in form horse so finishing 2 lengths from it in the Newcastle Cup should hold Saint Encosta (2) in good stead.  His record is a win and a 2nd from 3 starts over this distance.  Other hopes to Attica (3), They Won't Last (4) and Rothera (1).

Race 3 - It would not surprise me if Reflectance comes out and blows these away.  However I'm not prepared to take less than $2 on a young horse who has to carry 59kg and missed the start last time.  Huxtable (3) comes off a last start maiden win at Doomben over 1350m where he sat on the speed.  With weight relief on his rivals and a nice gate, I can see him taking advantage of that and putting the pressure on.  He worked well during the week.  Other hopes to Reflectance (1), Niello's Gift (7) and Antarctic Dream (2).

***With the scratching of Huxtable, I'll promote Reflectance (1) to top pick and promote Joint Initiative (4) to the other hopes***

Race 4 - Koranovsky (7) is racing in a rich vein of form at the moment.  2 starts back she was run down late by Whateverwhenever who has since run well in Melbourne.  Last start she fought hard to beat Cuddlesome over 1500m.  Gets the services of Chris Munce who will be able to place the horse in an excellent position from the good gate.  She has a very good record at this track.  Other hopes to Fillydelphia (2), Bold Glance (1) and Joint Chiefs (4).

Race 5 - Well I've been saying for some time that I won't be backing The Reveller again.  Each time, I give him another chance.  Well not today.  That means he'll probably come out and win!  I'm throwing my support behind Welcome Parade (7).  This horse goes well over this distance and has a good 1st up record. 1st up last time in, she ran 2nd by 1.3 lengths to Pear Tart who has proven to be a good horse.  Rosie Myer takes the ride and has won both times she's ridden the horse.  Welcome Parade will carry just 52kg after the claim.  From all reports, she worked impressively during the week.  Other hopes to The Reveller (4), Dr Barnard (3) and High On Octane (11).

Race 6 - Arado (3) enters this race in good form.  His last 2 starts have been over 1350m and he's run close up to Solebid and Beseech.  Both horses have been racing very well lately so that has to be good form for this race.  The 1500m shouldn't pose any problems as he's been running on.  Has the added bonus of Chris Munce directing.  Work during the week was good.  Other hopes to Gunner Knox (2), Defenceman (5) and Confident (8).

Race 7 - Transporter (6) has been a nice earner for The Silk and I think he can continue doing so here.  The horse has now won 6 from 14.  He loves this distance winning 3 from 3 (his last 3 starts).  His record at the track is also tops.  While I'm running off stats, Michael Cahill has ridden the horse 4 times for 4 wins.  I think he can get the horse travelling in a very nice spot from the inside gate and prove hard to run down.  Other hopes to Grey Assignment (2), Marked (9) and Playaction (7).

Race 8 - Should be plenty of value floating around in the get out.  It looks to be an open affair.  I'm going with the Tony Gollan trained Rodrigeuz (14).  This guy won 1st up and has since trained on.  He has a solid record over this distance and has won previously 2nd up.  Gets in with 52kg after the claim for Matheson.  I expect a solid speed to be set which will help him get home strongly.  Other hopes to Jabiru Dreaming (1), Tunahog (12) and Jugahlation (3).

13/10/12 - Doomben, Caulfield and Rosehill

It was lean pickings for The Silk last Saturday.  Actually it was downright awful.  The day started nicely with Kuroshio winning and paying $7 but then it all went horribly wrong.  Anyway, another big day of Spring racing gives me the chance to rectify the situation.

Doomben

Race 1 - All bar the top weight are 1st starters which makes this 2 year old race a tricky affair to get involved in.  For that reason I won't be getting involved. Having said that, my top pick would be Vienna Queen (10).  This filly ran 2nd by 3.5 lengths to Global Dream in a trial a few weeks ago.  That horse ran 2nd last week and gapped the rest of the field.  She comes from the astute Tony Gollan stable so you would suspect she is right to go.  Other hopes to Octane Flyer (5), Greytfilly (8) and Outback Lightning (6).

Race 2 - A small field of 6 go around here and I'll be supporting the Tony Gollan trained The Storeman (3).  Last start he ran 2nd splitting the talented pair Reflectance and Better Than Ready.  That's good form for a race like this.  He's drawn the outside but I can see him being able to track Lady Colours across and take up a decent position.  Other hopes to Lady Colours and Gibberer.

Race 3 - Endless Shadow (9) has come very close in her 3 runs this campaign.  In those races she's lost by a combined margin of 2 lengths.  You could say she was due! She's been running on well and I get the feeling this is her day. There will be a reasonable pace set with up to 4 horses chugging along up front.  This will enable Endless Shadow to real off 1 of her powerful finishes.  Any sting out of the track will not phase her in the slightest.  She's a very consistent horse, only being out of the placings 4 times in 13 starts.  Other hopes to Marculoo (5), Dream With Me (6) and Caellum (11).

Race 4 - Morning Captain (3) resumed last start and ran well for 3rd.  He lost by a narrow margin and with increased fitness, will be hard to beat here.  His record at the track is excellent, winning 2 and placing 2nd in 5 starts.  His 2nd up record stands at a win and a 2nd from 2 efforts.  Can handle all going which is a plus.  Mick Cahill should be able to get him a great trail behind Theft.  Other hopes to Theft (4), Funtantes (2) and Biggles (8).

Race 5 - A Brisbane 2000m race....awesome.  I always get the feeling there's a bit of pot luck involved with them.  Question marks hover a lot of these in their ability to run the race out.  I'm not going to get heavily involved but I will have a small wager on Buffett (5).  There's no questioning his ability to run the distance.  He will be close to the pointy end in running and could put it to the others before going on with it.  He comes off a 3rd place in the Lismore Cup over 2100m.  Other hopes to Eureka Jack (3), Billy Aucash (2) and Run Royal Run (4).

Race 6 - I won't lie, I found this race a doozy.  So many questions and not enough answers for my liking.  Found The One (6) has been running at shorter distances than this in recent times but I feel that the 1200m shouldn't pose any problems.  I can see a decent pace being set with the likes of Our Hussey and co having to push up early to try to get a spot.  That will suit Found The One who has shown an ability to motor home.  She put in a nice effort 1st up behind Theft and has a nice 2nd up record to her credit.  She also likes this track.  Other hopes to Our Hussey (10), Raise Up (2) and Funny Falve (13).

Race 7 - Run Jake Run (8) has an average winning strike rate but he's been racing very well of late where he has been finishing strongly.  A win seems very close.  His record over this distance stands at 5-5-2 from 19 starts.  Will get back but should be helped by a solid speed.  Other hopes to Home To The Bride (12), Sweet Little Filly (10) and Jack's Back (3).

***With the scratching of Jack's Back, I'll promote Preacher Boy (2) to the other hopes***

Race 8 - So many horses in the get out that like to lead.  This should make for a hot speed.  Beseech (10) is a horse in great form and 1 that won't involve itself in a speed battle but can take up a nice position.  He's stepped up through the grades nicely this time in.  It has a great weight swing on Balkuin who beat it 3 starts back by the narrowest of margins.  That could be crucial.  Other hopes to Balkuin (3), Silver Command (13) and Altai Warrior (5).

Caulfield

Race 1 - Veewap (5), Spacecraft (9), Smokin' Joey (2) and Mahisara (12)

Race 2 - Snitzerland (10), Lankan Rupee (5), Sizzling (1) and Generalife (7)

Race 3 - Hoss Amor (2), Elite Elle (5), Saturn Rock (8) and Zoria (14)

Race 4 - Buffering (1), Temple Of Boom (2), Pampelonne (4) and Malasun (10)

Race 5 - Ocean Park (6), Sincero (2), Sanagas (5) and Sabrage (7)

Race 6 - Solzhenitsyn (7), More Joyous (1), Tokugawa (9) and King Mufasa (2)

Race 7 - Pierro (1), All Too Hard (3), Epaulette (2) and Let Go Lenni (8)

Race 8 - Gatewood (2), Dance With Her (6), Ironstein (3) and Exceptionally (8)

Race 9 - Detours (3), Miss Marx (4), Classy Chloe (13) and Serene Star (14)

Rosehill

Race 1 - Crotchet (3), Sammy's Girl (10), Anasheed (7) and Regimental Pride (5)

Race 2 - Rebel Dane (2), Complicate (3), Eight Straight (1) and Queen's Elect (5)

Race 3 - Floor Show (4),Dreamworker (3), Sweet Talkin Woman (8) and Dancing Attendance (1)

Race 4 - Studio (4), Hoylonny (3), History No Hurdle (9) and Tiger Territory (11)

Race 5 - Under The Sun (6), Keith's Legacy (11), Levi's Choice (7) and Merlin Mustang (5)

Race 6 - Skyerush (1), Nocturnelle (5), Colorado Claire (2) and Forarainyday (10)

Race 7 - Malavio (6), Coup Ay Tee (8), Pureness (1) and Mr Armstrong (10)

Race 8 - Agueda (16), Ideal Position (2), Oakfield Commands (5) and Big Bonanza (9)

06/10/12 - Eagle Farm, Flemington and Randwick

It's Super Saturday so there's no need for me to bang on about the top racing we have ahead of us.  Let's get straight into it!

Eagle Farm

Race 1 - This race features 13 two year old fillies where only 2 of them have had a race start.  I generally don't like getting too involved in these races.  We have a nice one involved here that interests me in Global Dream (4).  This filly looked excellent winning a trial by 4 lengths and appeared to have quite a bit left in the tank.  She's from the very much in form Tony Gollan stable.  Other hopes to Grandkids Rock (5), Pretty Strong (11) and Nada To Prada (8).

Race 2 - It's the 2 year old lads turn here.  Again I've been drawn to a Tony Gollan trained horse.  Whiskey Allround (1) won his 1st start by 8.5 lengths at Toowoomba.  Although the quality of opposition would need to be questioned, a horse still has to get it done and to win by such a margin is impressive. He has trained on from that effort.  Other hopes to Oosthuizen (10), Mishani Gladiator (9) and Handled (6).

Race 3 - I won't be getting carried away here because as you well know, I hate these 2000m+ races in Brisbane.  I'm going to have a small wager on Attica (4).  This horse has been racing in excellent fashion, winning his last 3 races.  All have been over this distance.  He will race with just 51kg after the claim for Tegan Harrison who has ridden the horse twice for 2 wins.  Other hopes to Grey Assignment (2), They Won't Last (5) and Rothera (1).

***They Won't Last and Rothera have been scratched. I won't replace them as there's now only 4 racing.  Straight out 1st 4 would be 4, 2, 3, 6***

Race 4 - Reflectance (2) has put together 2 very nice runs this time in.  He was narrowly beaten by Better Than Ready 1st up and then turned the tables 2nd up.  That form has been franked this past Monday.  The way he finished off 2nd up gives me confidence that the 1400m will pose no problems.  Other hopes to Exogram (4), Platinum State (1) and Grayson Square (3).

Race 5 - Marked (8) put in an eye catcher 1st up when he finished strongly to run 3rd to the flyer Someday over 1350m.  Steps up to 1600m here with a good 2nd up record in the bag.  This horse has a liking for the track with 2 wins, a 2nd and 3rd from 6 starts.  He appreciates a firm surface and will be running on at the end.  Other hopes to Onetimeatbandcamp (7), War Ends (4) and Hour Of Peril (3).

Race 6 - Fillydelphia (1) is clearly the class runner here and should be too strong 1st up.  She has a perfect 1 from 1 record at this track and distance and has won 3 from 5 over the trip.  Her trackwork this week was good and I feel she is primed for a 1st up assault.  Other hopes to Whateverwhenever (5), Jet Style (7) and Joints Chiefs (4).

Race 7 - Cuddlesome (5) is a horse that is very much in form.  She's won her last 4 starts and looks to still have improvement left in her.  Brad Stewart steers her here and has built up a good understanding with the horse winning all 3 starts he's ridden her.  She has won all 3 times she's raced at the track.  She will race up on the speed and be very hard to catch.  Other hopes to Koranovsky (4), Hidden Kisses (1) and Bang On (2).

Race 8 - Bribie (7) should have a better record than he has with so many close 2nds.  Last start he lumped 59kg to go down by a nose to Run Royal Run over 1350m.  He's up in grade here but he drops significantly in weight to 54.5kg.  Wiggins should be able to give the horse an excellent run from the good gate.  Although he's never won at the track he does have 3 2nds and 2 3rds here from 7 starts which suggests he does like it.  He put in some excellent work during the week and I'm sure he's primed to put in a big showing.  Other hopes to Gunner Knox (4), Empress Me (9) and Hampden (5).

Race 9 - Jabiru Dreaming (2) was a horse who came to Brisbane with a tremendous winning record in the North.  To be honest, I was a little wary of how that would stand up here.  Well he certainly showed me when he ran well 1st up after a few months off behind some nice types including Too Many Reds.  He's now with a winning trainer and I think he'll really go on now.   His work during the week was excellent.  Other hopes to Rapid Leica Dane (5), Ticket To Dream (6) and Requested (4).
